Server load can be a critical thing. The higher the load numbers, the slower the site becomes, the server begins to become unresponsive, which in the end can result in a fatal crash. This modification will detect the load on the server, and if it is over 'x' (as defined in admin) it will automatically place the site into Maintenance mode, until the server has caught up and dropped below the allocated load level, and begin operations as normal.
